Chandler Pond is created.
1855
The pond is excavated for ice-making by horticulturist William Strong. It is leased to ice dealer Malcolm Chandler, who purchases it in 1865 and subsequently digs Strong’s Pond just to the west of it. Phineas Smith takes possession of Chandler’s Pond in 1883, John Sullivan in 1912, the Archdiocese of Boston in 1913, George Robertson in 1925, and it is purchased by the city in 1937.*
